A continuing journey towards self-reliance

Mr.  D.S. Negi, a senior member of Navdanya, trained 386 farmers from 11 gewogs in Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag (including 9 Agriculture Extension Officers, 2 Livestock Extension Officers, 18 local government representatives, 45 trainees from the College of Natural Resources and 9 interns from the Gaeddu College of Business Studies) on NPK (nitrogen, phosphate & potassium) compost making, seed saving/storage, land and soil nutrient management and natural pest management . The training was conducted from the 25th of November to the 9th of December, 2015 and covered all gewogs of Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag. From the training, 25 new farmer promoters have been identified. They will work as liaison between the farmers and concerned local authorities.

Navdanya is SJI’s traditional partner. It has been supporting SJI in capacity building of farmers and extension agents since its inception. Till date Mr. Negi and team have trained over 1000 students, farmers and extension agents.

SJI will coordinate with the extension agents and farmer promoters in implementing the knowledge and skills gained from the trainings. Building in-house field experience will also be a priority for SJI.
