Chokyi Gyatso Institute for Buddhist Studies (CGI) was the 1st model waste reducer in Samdrup Jongkhar (may be also in the country). In pursuing its Master Dzongsar Jamyang Khyenste Rinpoche’s vision, the 1st organic tshog (feast) offering (after the mindless onslaught of packaged food offering; until recently, organic tshog offering was the tradition in Bhutan) started from here (it has now become a national movement)
On October 1st, 2016, SJI engaged lamas, lopons and monks at CGI on the importance of sustained waste management effort and the need to institutionalize effective infrastructure with a sense of collective responsibility and with seniors leading by example.
Waste is a global challenge but more so for small, vulnerable and pristine GNH Bhutan. As mindless consumerism and materialism is visibly sucking the Bhutanese society, dire consequences including enormous waste generation and the corresponding demand for landfills will be unimaginable.
